Adopting a Shelter Dog: The 3-3-3 Rule Explained

Patience is Your Best Tool

Adopting from a shelter or rescue organization in the US is a beautiful act that saves a life. However, many adopters return dogs within a week because they didn't know what to expect. Enter the 3-3-3 rule.

1. The First 3 Days: Decompression

The dog will likely be terrified, overwhelmed, and shut down. They might not eat or drink much, and accidents in the house are common. Do not force interaction. Give them a quiet, dark crate or room to just decompress.

2. After 3 Weeks: Learning the Ropes

They are starting to figure out your routine. You will see their true personality start to shine, but you may also see behavioral issues (like barking or chewing) pop up as they feel more comfortable testing boundaries.

3. After 3 Months: Home at Last

The dog finally realizes they are safe and this is their forever home. The bond between you has solidified, and they easily adapt to your lifestyle schedule.
