Senior Pets: Navigating Arthritis and Quality of Life

They are getting older, and slowing down is natural, but chronic pain isn't. How to support your senior pet at home.

Senior Pets: Navigating Arthritis and Quality of Life

Aging is Not a Disease

As dogs and cats reach their golden years (usually around 7+ years old), Osteoarthritis is incredibly common. But "slowing down" is often just a symptom of untreated pain that owners assume is just normal aging.

1. Recognizing the Hidden Signs

Dogs rarely cry out in pain from arthritis. Instead, you'll see them hesitating before jumping on the couch, slipping on hardwood floors, or taking longer to stand up after a nap. Cats might stop grooming their lower back or miss the litter box because the edge is too high to step over.

2. Modern Management Options

Gone are the days when the only option was heavy liver-taxing medications. Today in the US, vets offer incredible biological injections (like Librela or Solensia) that target pain proteins directly, joint supplements, and laser therapy. Combine these with simple home modifications like area rugs for traction.
