Seasonal Canine Illness (SCI): The Autumn Woodland Threat

A mysterious and acute sickness strikes dogs walked in British woodlands between August and November.

Seasonal Canine Illness (SCI): The Autumn Woodland Threat

What is SCI?

First identified at the Sandringham Estate and various Forestry Commission sites, Seasonal Canine Illness is a devastating mystery condition. It affects dogs shortly (usually within 24 to 72 hours) after walking in woodlands during the British autumn.

Vomiting, Lethargy, and Dehydration

Clinical signs begin incredibly fast. A dog will be perfectly fine, then suddenly experience prolific vomiting, severe diarrhoea, abdominal pain, and extreme lethargy. Because the exact trigger (fungi? algae? harvest mites?) is still unproven, veterinarians can only treat the horrific symptoms with intensive IV fluids.

Harvest Mites Link

Many (but not all) dogs suffering from SCI were found heavily infested with harvest mites. Animal Health Trusts strongly recommend applying a vet-approved anti-mite spray to your dog's paws and underbelly before entering dense bracken and woodland in late autumn.
