UK Beach Bans: When Dogs Are Kicked Off the Sand

Planning a seaside trip to Cornwall or Brighton? Read up on summer Public Space Protection Orders (PSPOs).

UK Beach Bans: When Dogs Are Kicked Off the Sand

The May to September Lockout

Britain hosts some of the most beautiful coastlines in the world, heavily cherished by dog walkers. But between May 1st and September 30th, local councils enforce strict seasonal dog bans on all heavily populated "Blue Flag" tourist beaches.

Patrols and Fixed Penalty Notices

Taking your dog onto a banned beach during summer isn't just socially frowned upon; it's a criminal offence managed by a Public Space Protection Order (PSPO). Council wardens relentlessly patrol beaches in hotspots like St Ives, Weymouth, and Bournemouth. Violating the signposts carries an immediate Fixed Penalty Notice of £100.

Finding Dog-Friendly Coves

The good news is that most councils preserve "dog-friendly" stretches of beach year-round, normally slightly further down the coastline from the core holidaymaker zones. Apps and local tourism boards frequently publish "Dog Friendly Beach" maps.
