Taking Your Dog on the Tube: The TfL Rules

Can you tap in with a Great Dane? A guide to navigating London transport, Oyster cards, and escalators with pets.

Taking Your Dog on the Tube: The TfL Rules

Free Travel for Fido

Unlike some European capitals, Transport for London (TfL) is incredibly dog-friendly. Dogs travel completely free on the London Underground, Overground, Buses, and the DLR, meaning you never need to tap an Oyster card for your spaniel.

The Escalator Rule

There is one non-negotiable safety rule: dogs must be carried on moving escalators. If you have a mastiff that you cannot physically lift, you are strictly required to use the stairs or step-free lift access. If neither is available at your station, you cannot use that exit with the dog.

Rush Hour Etiquette

While allowed, taking a dog on the Central Line during the 8am commuter crush is heavily frowned upon and immensely stressful for the animal due to the heat and lack of floor space. Always avoid peak times unless absolutely necessary.
