The Crufts Effect: Breed Standards and Brachycephalic Dogs

The British obsession with Pugs and French Bulldogs has led to the UK Vet profession begging owners to "stop and think".

The Crufts Effect: Breed Standards and Brachycephalic Dogs

BOAS: Breathing Shouldn't Be Hard Work

The UK has seen an astronomical surge in the popularity of "flat-faced" (brachycephalic) breeds like the French Bulldog, English Bulldog, and Pug. Unfortunately, this aesthetic trend has resulted in a genuine animal welfare crisis in British vet clinics.

The Surgery Epidemic

These dogs routinely suffer from Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome (BOAS). What owners perceive as "cute snoring" or "snorting" is actually the terrifying sound of an animal struggling to pull oxygen through severely deformed, crushed airways. Many Bulldogs nowadays require £3,000 palate-shortening surgeries just to survive a mild British summer.

Vet Advocacy

The British Veterinary Association (BVA) launched the #BreedToBreathe campaign, advising prospective owners against selecting exaggerated flat-faced puppies. Opt for breeders who prioritise health testing and longer muzzles, rather than "the Crufts standard" flat-faced look.
