Livestock Worrying: Off-Lead Dogs and Farmer Rights

Did you know farmers have the legal right to shoot your dog if it threatens their sheep? Follow the Countryside Code.

Livestock Worrying: Off-Lead Dogs and Farmer Rights

A £1,000 Fine and a Tragic End

Nothing embodies the British countryside like a sprawling walk through rolling hills and public footpaths. However, entering fields kissing livestock is fraught with danger. "Livestock worrying" is a criminal offence in the UK.

The Law on Shooting Dogs

Under the Dogs (Protection of Livestock) Act 1953, if a dog is found chasing or attacking sheep, cows, or poultry, the police can impose heavy fines. More crucially, as a last resort to protect their livelihood, a farmer has the legal right to shoot your dog on sight if it is actively attacking their herd.

Lambing Season (Spring)

Even a playful dog chasing a pregnant ewe can cause immense stress, leading to abortion of the lamb or death of the ewe from heart failure. Always keep your dog strictly on a lead when crossing agricultural fields, no matter how "friendly" their recall usually is.
