Alabama Rot (CRGV): The Deadly Muddy Paws Mystery

Walking your dog in muddy British woodlands during winter can harbour a rare but fatal flesh-eating disease.

Alabama Rot (CRGV): The Deadly Muddy Paws Mystery

The UK Outbreaks

First detected in the UK around the New Forest, Hampshire, Cutaneous and Renal Glomerular Vasculopathy (CRGV) - commonly known as Alabama Rot - is an extremely terrifying disease. The cause remains entirely unknown, though it is strongly linked to walking dogs in muddy, wet woodland during winter and spring.

Symptoms to Look For

The first sign is typically unexplained skin sores, redness, or ulcers, usually found below the elbow or knee, on the belly, or the muzzle. Within days, this can escalate to severe and sudden kidney failure, heralded by vomiting, reduced appetite, and extreme tiredness.

Prevention is Key

Because there is no vaccine or known cure, veterinary specialists advise thoroughly washing all mud off your dog immediately after every woodland walk. While Alabama Rot is rare, washing the paws is a simple step that could be lifesaving.
