Surviving the Finnish Winter: Essential Tips for Happy Pets

Winter in Finland is a magical time of snow and 'kaamos' (the polar night), but it's also a time of extreme cold that requires special care for our pets. From the streets of Helsinki to the wilds of Lapland, Finnish pet owners have developed time-tested strategies to keep their animals safe and warm.

The 'Three Layers' of Paw Protection

Finnish winters are tough on paws. Salt is used on city sidewalks, and the extreme cold can cause frostbite. 1. Use a paw wax before going out. 2. Wash paws immediately upon returning to remove salt. 3. For long walks or sensitive breeds, use high-quality dog boots that stay on in deep snow.

Golden Advice

"Visibility is your number one safety concern during the dark Finnish winter. A simple collar light is not enough. Use a full reflective vest for your dog and yourself. Many Finnish pet owners also use 'Leuchtturm' (LED collars) that are visible from hundreds of meters away, even in heavy snowfall."

Indoor Comfort and Dry Air

Finnish central heating (kaukolämpö) is very efficient but can make the indoor air extremely dry. This can lead to itchy skin and dandruff in cats and dogs. Consider using a humidifier or adding a high-quality fish oil (omega-3) to your pet's food during the winter months to keep their coat and skin healthy.

Ice Safety on Lakes and Sea

Finland is the land of a thousand lakes, and in winter, they freeze. While it's tempting to let your dog run on the ice, be extremely cautious. Thin ice is a major hazard, especially near bridges or where currents are strong. Always keep your dog on a leash near frozen water unless you are 100% certain of the ice thickness, as a dog falling through the ice is a high-risk rescue for everyone involved.
