Transmission and Risk
Heartworm is transmitted through mosquito bites. While the risk is low in the prairies due to the extreme dry cold, it is a significant concern in Southern Ontario, the Maritimes, and the warmer coastal regions of BC.
The Canadian Schedule
Most Canadian vets recommend heartworm prevention from June to November, coinciding with the mosquito season. A simple monthly chewable can prevent a condition that is otherwise painful, expensive, and life-threatening to treat.
