Athletes of the Canine World
Whether they are actually mustering sheep on a farm or just endlessly chasing a tennis ball in the suburbs, Australian Kelpies and Blue Heelers burn an astonishing amount of calories. Their nutritional needs are dramatically different from a lap dog.
1. High Fat, High Protein
An active working breed requires diets that are 25-30% protein and at least 20% fat. Fat is the most efficient source of sustained energy for endurance. Look for formulas specifically marked for "Working Dogs" or "Performance."
2. Timing the Meals
Never feed a large meal immediately before or after heavy exercise. This exponentially increases the risk of Bloat (Gastric Dilatation-Volvulus), a fatal twisting of the stomach. Wait at least an hour after exercise before feeding.
