Snake Bites: What Every Aussie Pet Owner Needs to Know

The Backyard Threat

Australia is home to some of the most venomous snakes in the world. Curiosity often leads dogs and cats to confront them. A bite from an Eastern Brown, Tiger, or Red-Bellied Black snake is a catastrophic medical emergency.

1. The Collapse and Recovery Myth

A classic sign of a snake bite in dogs is a sudden collapse, followed shortly by the dog returning to completely normal behavior. Do not be fooled! This "pre-paralytic phenomenon" means the venom is circulating, and severe paralysis and internal bleeding will start within the hour.

2. Immediate Action

If you suspect a snake bite, keep the pet as still as possible. Do NOT attempt to wash the wound, do NOT try to kill the snake (vets use a swab test to identify the venom anyway), and rush to the nearest vet clinic. Call ahead so they can prepare the antivenom.
