The Ardennes: Safety Tips for Hiking with Dogs

Ticks in Belgian Forests: Prevention and Lyme Disease Awareness

Belgium's lush forests in the Ardennes and the Sonian Forest near Brussels are beautiful for walking, but they are also prime habitats for ticks. With rising temperatures, tick season in Belgium has extended, and the risk of Lyme disease (Borreliosis) for both pets and humans is a serious concern for any outdoor enthusiast.

Understanding the Risk

Ticks in Belgium are most active from March to November, but they can be found whenever temperatures are above 7°C. They wait in tall grass and leaf litter for a host to pass by. In the Ardennes, a high percentage of ticks carry the bacteria that cause Lyme disease. For dogs, this can lead to lethargy, joint pain, and in severe cases, kidney damage.

Golden Advice

"Don't wait until you see a tick to act. Use a vet-recommended preventative (pill, spot-on, or collar) throughout the year. After a forest walk, perform a 'tick check' by running your hands over your dog's body, paying close attention to the ears, armpits, and between the toes. Early removal is the best way to prevent infection."

Proper Removal Techniques

If you find a tick, remove it immediately using a tick hook or tweezers. Do not use old-fashioned methods like 'suffocating' the tick with oil or alcohol, as this can cause the tick to regurgitate bacteria into your dog's bloodstream. Pull the tick straight out with steady pressure. If you notice a circular red rash or if your dog becomes unusually tired in the weeks following a bite, contact your veterinarian immediately.

Protecting Yourself Too

Remember that ticks can easily crawl from your dog's fur onto you or your furniture. Wearing long trousers tucked into socks when hiking in the Belgian countryside and using an insect repellent containing DEET or Icaridin can help protect the human members of the family as well.
